Diving Beginner’s common questions

  • What’s involved in learning to scuba dive with Mirage Divers?

Learning to scuba dive is an incredible adventure!

With Mirage Divers as your diving center and PADI as your training organization, your path to breathing underwater is accomplished in three exciting phases:

    1. Knowledge Development
Learn the lingo! During the first phase of your PADI Open Water Diver scuba certification, you develop an understanding of the basic principles of scuba diving. You learn things like how pressure affects your body, how to choose the best scuba gear and what to consider when planning dives.

You briefly review what you have studied in the five knowledge sections with your instructor and take a short quiz to be sure you’re getting it. At the end of the course, you’ll take a longer quiz that makes sure you have all the key concepts and ideas down. You and your instructor will review anything that you don’t quite get until it’s clear.

With Mirage Divers you can select the knowledge development option you prefer:

    • Start right now and learn to scuba dive online with PADI eLearning at your own pace—anytime, anywhere (great for busy schedules).
    • Contact us now and book you diving course with Mirage Divers (great value holiday plans and fantastic diving).
    • Attend a scheduled scuba diving class at your local PADI dive shop (great for meeting new friends and dive buddies).
    • Take advantage of home study using PADI multimedia materials (manual, video, CD-Rom) so less classroom time when you are in Dahab.

    2. Confined Water Dives – Scuba Skills Training

This is what it’s all about – diving. You develop basic scuba skills by diving in shallow water with pool-like conditions surrounded by fish. You will learn everything from setting up your scuba gear to how to easily get water out of your scuba mask without surfacing. You’ll also practice some emergency skills, like sharing air or replacing your scuba mask.

Plus, you may play some games, make new friends and have a great time.

There are five confined water dives, with each building upon the previous. Over the course of these five dives, you attain the skills you need to dive in open water.

    3. Open Water Dives
After your confined water dives, you and the new friends you’ve made continue learning during four open water dives with your Mirage Divers PADI Instructor at a dive site. This is where you fully experience the underwater adventure – at the beginner level, of course. You may make these dives near the diving center or after a 30 min. jeep drive to the south of Dahab.

  • How long does it take to get certified with Mirage Divers, Dahab?

It takes only a few days to get certified. It’s possible to complete your confined and open water dives in as few as three or four days.

You can also save yourself some classroom time while you are on your holiday in Dahab by completing the theory portion online via PADI eLearning or through some home study using PADI materials.

And it is good to know that with Mirage Divers the PADI Open Water Diver course is incredibly flexible and performance based, which means that we offer a wide variety of schedules, paced according to how fast you progress.

Mirage Divers instructors are interested in you learning to scuba dive, not in how long you sit in a classroom. So training is based upon demonstrating that you know what you need to know and can do what you need to do. This means that you progress at your own pace – faster or slower depending upon the time you need to become a confident scuba diver who dives regularly. and of course you can start learning to scuba dive online right now with PADI eLearning.

  • How much does it cost to take a scuba diving course?

Scuba Diving is the most spectacular way to see the reef and explore the underwater world, and learning to dive in Dahab by the Red Sea will put a smile on your face. The memories you take with you will last a lifetime... and we mean that literally.

Compared with getting started in other popular adventure sports and outdoor activities,

Learning to scuba dive isn’t expensive. For example, you can expect to pay about the same as you would for:

    • a full day of surfing lessons.
    • a weekend of rock climbing lessons.
    • a weekend of kayaking lessons.
    • a weekend of fly-fishing lessons.
    • about three hours of private golf lessons.
    • about three hours of private water skiing lessons.
    • one amazing night out at the pub!

Learning to scuba dive in Dahab with Mirage Divers is a great value when you consider that you learn to dive under the guidance and attention of a high trained, experienced professional – our PADI Scuba Instructor.

From the first day in your course, scuba diving starts transforming your life with new experiences you share with friends. And, you also start learning online and get ready to take your first breath underwater!

  • What’s required to take a scuba diving course?

If you have an appetite for excitement and adventure, odds are you can become an avid PADI scuba diver!

You'll also want to keep in mind these requirements:

    • Minimum Age: 10 years old, Students younger than 15 years, who successfully complete the course qualify for the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification, which they may upgrade to PADI Open Water Diver certification upon reaching 15. You must be at least 13 years old to take scuba lessons online with PADI eLearning, due to international internet laws. If you’re younger, you can still learn to dive – just have your parent or legal guardian contact your local PADI Dive Shop or Resort.
    • Physical: For safety, all students complete a brief scuba medical questionnaire that asks about medical conditions that could be a problem while diving. If none of these apply, you sign the form and you’re ready to start. If any of these apply to you, as a safety precaution your physician or a physician in Dahab must assess the condition as it relates to diving and sign a medical form that confirms that you’re fit to dive. ( Download the scuba medical questionnaire ).
    • Waterskills: Before completing the PADI Open Water Diver course, your instructor will have you demonstrate basic waterskills comfort by having you:
      - swim 200 metres/yards (or 300 metres/yards in mask, fins and snorkel). There is no time limit for this, and you may use any swimming strokes you want.
      - float and tread water for 10 minutes, again using any methods that you want.
    • About Physical Challenges: Any individual who can meet the performance requirements of the course qualifies for certification. There are many adaptive techniques that allow individuals with physical challenges to meet these requirements. Individuals with paraplegia, amputations and other challenges commonly earn the PADI Open Water Diver certification. Even individuals with more significant physical challenges participate in diving. Contact us for more information or check with the closest diving doctor before starting.
    • Learning Materials : Unless you choose PADI eLearning, you’ll need and use the following training materials during the PADI Open Water Diver course, and for your review and reference after the course:

The PADI Open Water Diver Manual
PADI Open Water Diver Video or the PADI Open Water Diver Multimedia (combines manual and video for computer based learning).
You will also need a Logbook and Recreational Dive Planner (Table, Wheel or eRDP).

You can buy these materials at home or buy them at Mirage Divers, we offer full range of PADI materials. Please contact us for more info.
  • My ears hurt when I dive down snorkeling or in a pool. Can I still be a scuba diver?

    YES, YOU CAN!

Assuming you have no irregularities in your ears and sinuses. The discomfort is the normal effect of water pressure pressing in on your ears. Fortunately, our bodies are designed to adjust for pressure changes in our ears – you just need to learn how. If you have no difficulties adjusting to air pressure during flying, you'll probably experience no problem learning to adjust to water pressure while diving.

Please contact us for more info.

  • Does a history of ear trouble, asthma, allergies or smoking stop me from diving?

    Not necessarily.

Any condition that affects the ears, sinuses, respiratory or heart function or may alter consciousness is a concern, but only a physician can assess a person’s individual risk. Physicians can consult with the Divers Alert Network (DAN)  as necessary when assessing a scuba candidate.

Download the PADI Medical Statement to take to your physician. and please contact us for more info.

  • Do women have any special concerns regarding diving?

    Aside from pregnancy, no.

Because physiologists know little about the effects of diving on the fetus, the recommendation is that women avoid diving while pregnant or trying to become pregnant. Menstruation is not normally a concern.

Please contact us for more info.

  • What happens if I use up all my air while diving?

    That’s not likely

Because you have a gauge that tells you how much air you have at all times. This way, you can return to the surface with a safety reserve remaining. But to answer the question, if you run out of air, your buddy has a spare mouthpiece that allows you to share a single air supply while swimming to the surface.

There are also other options you’ll learn in your scuba diving training. Contact us for more info.

  • What if I feel claustrophobic?

Unlikely - people find the “weightlessness” of scuba diving to be quite freeing

Year-round excellent visibility in the Red Sea also reduces the likelihood of feeling claustrophobic

Modern scuba masks are available in translucent models, which you may prefer if a mask makes you feel closed in.

During your scuba diving training, your instructor gives you plenty of time and coaching to become comfortable with each stage of learning. Your scuba instructor works with you at your own pace to ensure you master each skill necessary to become a capable scuba diver who dives regularly. ans please contact us for more info.

Mirage Divers Daily Diving Trips and operation

  • What diving qualifications or experience do I need?

Generally diving on the reef by the Red Sea is easy, with warm, calm, clear waters.

The majority of international levels of dive qualifications are considered acceptable to dive the Red Sea, however, the level of diving qualification is not normally considered as essential as the number of dives that the diver has logged and the conditions that the diver has previously experienced.

Newly qualified divers will have no problems in enjoying easy and amazing open water dives.

For a list of the accepted and valid diving certifications in the Red Sea please click here and please contact us for more info.

  • What happens on my first day diving?

At Mirage Divers, we aim to make your first day diving easy and fun

If you are starting Daily Guided Diving:

After being introduced to your dive guide and a tour of the dive center, your first dive (maybe a check dive if you haven't dived for more than 6 months) will probably be diving either at the Light House reef or Moray Garden reef in Wadi Gnai south of Dahab,

They are both brilliant shore dives to start your diving holiday with, thanks to their guaranteed conditions, easy entrance/exit and perfect conditions to check your weights and equipment, though there are other options to dive on the first dive depending on the sea conditions and your diving experience.

Once the first dive is over you have full freedom to discuss with your Dive Guide or Instructor where to go for the other dives depending on sea conditions and divers experience

If you are starting a PADI Course:

You will meet your PADI Instructor who will personally guide you through every aspect of your course from the paperwork and equipment to scheduling water and classroom sessions.

Our Instructors will make you feel comfortable and well looked after right from the start! Please contact us for more info.

  • I havent dived for more than 6 months, do I need to do anything?

YES, A check dive will apply..

It is always recommended to do a check dive if you haven't dived for over than 6 months and if haven't dived for over than one year we would recommend the PADI Scuba Review course

The Scuba Review Tune-up is just the refresher you need. It reacquaints you with diving so that you're back to feeling comfortable in the underwater world in less than a day and it will help you brush up on your scuba knowledge and skills and improve your diving ability.

Please contact us for more info.

  • What time does the diving start and until what time?

    Daily from 8:00 until 17:30

We are open all year and everyday except for the 1st January every year. The reception at Mirage Village Hotel will be more than happy to help if the dive center is not in working hours.

It is not surprising that we have one of the highest staff retention rates of any diving center in Dahab. We strongly believe that creating a caring, fun, and growing atmosphere for our staff will result in a rewarding experience that our guests will long remember.
    • Facilities: All our facilities have been simply and comfortably designed, to include:
Diving Counter, Classrooms, large washing/drying area and secure storage lockers.
We've deliberately concentrated our efforts on making everything in the center fit every diver's individual needs. Similarly, our facilities are continually being upgraded, having been fitted with spacious bathrooms with hot showers.
And apres diving, relax in our more than comfortable lounge or private beach areas which come with free WIFI to allow our guests to fully enjoy their experience with us. We also have a restaurant that caters for all needs, from fresh juices, great coffee and sandwiches to full meals.
    • We stick to our principles : Safety + Standards + Environment
      • Your safety is our #1 priority
      • We employ only certified and experienced instructors and guides with exemplary interpersonal skills, who provide environmental dive briefings and follow local diving regulations.
      • Each diving trip must have:
      - a First Aid box with full contents.
      - Portable Emergency Oxygen Cylinder.
      - An easy emergency information board.
      - Spare box in case of any lost/forgotten/malfunctioning equipment.

All our daily diving programs are planned according to the weather and environmental considerations, including tides and surface conditions, to ensure a safe, fun adventure.

Arrival, Departure, Check in and Check out

  • What happens on my arrival day?

There is nothing like knowing that you can dive the Red Sea in few hours from your home country!

After checking in your hotel and getting your shorts on :) and there is still enough sunlight time, we will pick you you up or you can come down to the diving center to plan or make your first dive.

It is all your choice and depends on you and your arrival time. you can start the diving straight away or just relax and start the day after in the morning. as Mirage Divers is flexible as it gets and planning dives is what we do all day :).

When you are in the diving center you will find yourself a friend with everyone in no time, while everyone is catering to make you feel comfortable in the place.

  • How do I check in the Diving Center?

Checking in at the diving center is too simple !

Just come down to our counter at the diving center and they will help you sort everything out including your diving plan, paper work, getting the diving equipment and having a diving center tour so you get to know what is what, who is who, and most importantly to know where you can make your tea and coffee for free -:)

  • I lost my diving card, can I check in without it?

Yes you can, however, proof of your certification will be required,

If you are a PADI diver just let know your full name as was written on the card and your birth date and you are set.

We will be able to get your PADI certifications records online and give you a copy to have as a reference.

  • I have a medical problem, can I still check in and dive?

It is always good to know that, the Diving and snorkelling are more than underwater sightseeing,

They are exhilarating sports that require a reasonable level of fitness and a recognition of your limitations.

Divers undertaking diving courses or signing up for fun guided dives will be required to complete a straightforward PADI medical questionnaire to confirm their medical fitness to dive is still current (you can download it from here).  If any of the conditions listed in the form apply you will have to be checked by a doctor to make sure that you are fit to dive (normally it takes 30 min. to give the doctor a visit or have him come to the diving center).

Your safety is our main priority so we will not be flexible with safety standards. please check the form at our downloads section.

If the doctor does not declare you fit to dive you are more than welcome to join our diving trips so you could do some snorkelling or whatever fits your health situation.

  • What papers, documentation and equipment should I bring?

If you require any special diving equipment please let us know and we will arrange it for you.

  • How do I check out and how to settle my bill?
